Editors Noteby Rob Howard |
![]() Cyril Damian and his contemporaries, who built accordions that are also known as flutinas, would surely be astounded at subsequent developments in the accordion, and how the instrument has flourished globally. We today, on the other hand, owe it to our forebears to promote the accordion in every way we can. Please let Accordions Worldwide know what accordion events are taking place near you to celebrate World Accordion Day. You do this by Registering your activity on the World Accordion Day website. A new event for 2012 is a live streaming 24 Hour Celebration of the Accordion, similar to the TV coverage of New Years Eve, whereby celebrations are viewed on an ongoing basis as the time zones elapse around the world. The production will be available for viewing live throughout the day with 24 separate hours of archived video coverage which will be available for viewing anytime after the event. 2012 All Russian Day of the Bayan, Accordion and Harmonica – Russiaby Rob Howard |
![]() |
![]() The bayan, the accordion and the harmonica always were very popular in Russia. At the fronts of the Great Patriotic War, at celebrations such as weddings etc, they were irreplaceable companions of Russian everyday life. In 1948 the folk instrument got a new impulse when, for the very first time in the world, a faculty was opened at the Gnessin Institute (nowadays, Academy). From that time, Russian students have been most successful in all the prestigious international accordion competitions. Starting from 2010 this festival was held in Moscow, Nishnij Novgorod, Novomoskovsk, Tula, Woronesh, Saratov, Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk, Chelyabinsk, Jemanshelinsk, Kurgan, Samara, Jekaterinburg, Vladivostok and many other Russian cities. In 2012 this event was organized on 17th March and upon the suggestion of the Chair and the Interregional Federation of Bayanists and Accordionists (newly-founded in December 2011), a so-called ‘Introduction’ was held in the Gnessin Concert Hall the day before, 16th March. This was a unique concert of the winners of the most famous international competitions in 2011 titled ‘The Golden Winners 2011’. Performers were: Nenad Ivanovitch (picture left lower) – 1st prize Castelfidardo and at the Coupe Mondiale in Shanghai (China), Josef Purits (Russia) – 1st prize in Arrasate (Spain), Thibaut Trosset (France) – 1st prize in Klingenthal (Germany) Hu Xianan (China) – 1st prize at the Trophée Mondiale in Pineto (Italy). Unfortunately Thibaut Trosset could not come. Nenad Ivanovitch obtained most votes (thus the sympathy prize of the public) and took part in the main concert on March 17th. Pictures from the main concert. Above is the Gnessin Music Academy Accordion Orchestra. Pictures left, Friedrich Lips Speech, Nenad Ivanovitch. Henry believes "the Rhapsody has been performed many times with accordion, but the most amazing performance using accordion instead of piano was the very first radio broadcast of the Rhapsody in 1924!" The Rhapsody has become a staple of the accordion repertoire, and it has inspired other composers to write works for accordion and orchestra. The CD is scheduled for release on Gershwin's 100th birthday, September 26th 1998. |
