Tommy Scruton (1941-2013), Manchester – UKby Rob Howard |
![]() Tom was taught the accordion in the 1950s by the late Dick Murtagh, and played to a high standard. After army service he became an insurance agent, and taught the accordion part-time for many years until quite recently. He had a particular interest in the music of Pietro Frosini, Guido and Pietro Deiro, Charles Magnante, and Toralf Tollefesen, and was an authority on the lives and works of all five. Tom collected and catalogued virtually all their sheet music, and was very proud of this large collection. He held strong and implacable views extolling the virtues of these masters of yesteryear, and was well-known for his intense dislike of most modern accordion compositions. In recent times Tom set up ‘Tom Scruton Accordion Recordings’, transferring otherwise unavailable LPs on to CDs by accordionists such as Charles Magnante, Toralf Tollefesen, Martin Lukins, Charles Camilleri, Henry Krein, Kramer & Wolmer, Don & Rico Destefano, and many others. The purpose of this project was to make the classic accordion recordings of yesteryear available to present and future generations. For further information email: robaccord5@hotmail.com |

Celebrating Fathers Day, 100 Year Ago, Ben Emmett Born - UKby Harley Jones |
![]() "Here's a picture of my Dad, Benjamin Richard Hornsby Emmett, (well known accordion teacher of Dargaville, New Zealand, who's most famous student was Kevin Friedrich), born 100 years ago this week (3rd September 1913). Dad died nearly 40 years ago: 6th December 1976. I didn't realise the timing until just now - but next weekend I am taking my family - including my sister- for the first time for a family history trip to Coromandel. I will show my family - including my sister Linda - the places where Dad and Mum lived and worked when they first came to New Zealand (and started playing music together in their first dance band - before putting their instruments down and dancing the tango!!). And yes my mum Doreen was definately equal partner! Amazing couple! They met in India in the 1940's while both working for the RAF! Dad learnt the accordion from Matyas Seiber (GS Mathis) in England, and was a friend of UK composer, arranger and historian, Graham Romani! Amongst other family history places we will see our home in the main street of Coromandel. And just up the road the Coromandel Hospital where mum worked (while I took my first steps); plus the Thames Hospital where I was born (and my fiance Wayne died 5 1/2 years ago). Also the Chilterns/Waterworks property where my father stayed with his mentors the Ogilvies while mum was in the hospital having me!" Happy Fathers Day to all fathers around the world. |
