Coupe Mondiale Results and Daily Reports in English and Chinese - Chinaby Harley Jones |
![]() |
![]() ![]() The Coupe Mondiale, held in Shanghai from October 1st to 6th October was the first time the event has been hosted in Asia, with the Chinese hosts being the Shanghai Federation of Literacy and Art Circles (SFLAC) and the China Accordion Association (CAA). CIA President Raymond Bodell (picture left) said “a special thank you must be made for the wonderful hospitality, the world class concerts and to all the other factors that resulted in a record 170 plus contestants attending. Our hosts led by Prof. Li Cong (picture right) were wonderful and I thank you on behalf of all present, from the very bottom of my heart” Li Cong received a standing ovation from the CIA delegates in appreciation. The prediction before the event by CAA President Li Cong that “more than 170 contestants from 25 countries is sure to be a fantastic and fierce competition” was certainly evidenced in the very close results. Full results are online at: 2011CoupeResults. Further news below. The event was virtually non stop music from 8 am to late evening daily. There was competition music in three venues running during the day, major evening concerts, a festival involving large numbers, the World Accordion Orchestra V and a number of accordion manufacturers displaying during the day. The festival of more than 1,300 performers from the 29 accordion teams, appearing in squares, parks and business centers in Shanghai received considerable media publicity and the 9 special concerts featuring such artists (in alphabetical order) as Richard Galliano, Grayson Masefield, Modern Pop Accordion of Shanghai, Alexander Poeluev, Alexander Selivanov, Renzo Ruggieri and Sergey Voytenko of Bayan Mix, were televised. Overall, the Coupe Mondiale received lots of positive media coverage. Picture Below is one of our essential assistants Xu Zheng alongside a large banner promoting the event. Lower picture: The CIA World Accordion Orchestra V closed the 64th Coupe Mondiale and Festival and pictured are the two conductors, Chen Weiliang (China) and Joan Sommers (USA) with CIA President Raymond Bodell and CAA President Prof. Li Cong accepting the extended applause of the audience. |

Quite a remarkable achievement and showing just how strong Chinese contestants have become in all categories. Junior Coupe Mondiale winner: Radisavljevic, Predrag (Serbia) Pietro Adragna (picture right, Italy) was a winner of two categories, the International Competition for Virtuoso Entertainment Music and the International Competition for Digital Accordion. Yehuda Oppenheimer Book Release and Reunion - Israelby Harley Jones |
![]() |
![]() "There was a wonderful reunion attended by 42 of my pupils and their families, two of whom came especially from the USA to attend. We enjoyed five wonderful hours of music, stories and much love. The focus of the event was the release of a book about my life. It includes my original compositions and arrangements and is more than 200 pages. This project came to life through the generosity of one of my students, who had a dream, to publish a book about his teacher. He organised and assisted the publishing of the book and it came out stunning." The book will be available from MusicForAccordion.com shortly. For further information, email Yehuda Oppenheimer. Available online at Yehuda Oppenheimer are two CD's, original compositions, arrangements of folk music and famous classics. |

British Button Box Workshop Weekend, Somerset – UKby Rob Howard |
![]() John Kirkpatrick leads a series of workshops for players of the 3-row British chromatic button accordion - the quirky instrument that was taken round the world in the first class hands of Jimmy Shand. The right hand has three melodeon (diatonic) rows in B, C, and C#, and the left hand side has a stradella bass system. John will be starting out from his very firm base in Traditional English Folk Music, so the style and approach will be quite different from the Scottish Country Dance repertoire made famous by Jimmy Shand and his many followers. This weekend is also very instrument specific, and will not be suitable for ordinary melodeons, nor for players of the 2-row Irish style. But there will be sessions on the accordion's left hand, so players of other styles of accordion can be included. As well as covering the expected fields of Morris tunes, Country Dance tunes, and folk songs, John will also be looking at the complexities of playing in all the keys available on this gloriously compact instrument, and exploring swathes of repertoire that may not be immediately associated with the poor old push-pull squeeze-box! Whether you've been playing five minutes or fifty years, this is a great opportunity to come and learn at the feet of one of England's most dedicated and respected musicians. John Kirkpatrick is widely acknowledged as the British folk scene’s best and busiest accordionist, constantly in demand at folk clubs and festivals as a performer and workshop leader, and also in the theatre and recording studios as a session musician. He plays the 3-row British chromatic button accordion, 1 and 2 row melodeons, the Anglo concertina, and is also a fine singer and composer.
