 From the beginning of the winter semester 2008/09, the Hochschule für Musik Detmold offers the accordion as a main subject in all artistic courses of studies up to the concert degree (Konzertexamen).The courses of study include: - Freelance musician (bachelor) - Instrumental education (bachelor) - Concert degree (Konzertexamen) - Main subject in school music, musical mediation and elementary music education (combined main subject) Grzegorz Stopa, a performer and teacher, with several prize and award winners to his credit, teaches this class. For anyone interested in studying, Hochschule für Musik Detmold offers a free master class for accordion solo and chamber music from September 27th to 30th. In addition to a concluding concert, there is a possibility to become acquainted with the newly installed wave field synthesis in the concert hall. This worldwide unique loudspeaker system affords innovative impulses for contemporary and experimental music. Zitarrosa Acordeones Festival, Montevideo – Uraguayby Rob Howard |

 On Sunday August 2nd 25 accordionists participated in a show called the Chamber Acordeones Zitarrosa. The event was coordinated by Professor Silvio Previale, teacher and accordionist from the city of Salto, who had organized similar events in 2006 and 2008. The festival was supported by the Department of Culture of the municipality of Salto, and the Italian Cultural Institute in Montevideo. Accordionists performing in the concert included Raul Barboza, Antonio Taragó Ross, and Spaciuck Chango, all three visiting from Argentina, Uraguayan star Victor Amaral (well know as accompanist with the duo Los Olimareños), and special guests accordionist Denis Raykoff and the Takuare'e. The concert included interpretations of popular, classical and folk music. The evening ended with a performance by an orchestra featuring 13 accordions plus percussion, with the special participation of Jose Luis Curubeto. Other accordionists performing included, from Argentina - Marito Coria, Adelqui Bertotto, Edmundo Re, Norberto Pinotti, Mariela Campodónico, Daniel Ren, and Nino Favotti; from Uraguay - Héctor Bruzzone, Néstor Bisio, Sergio Gomez, Sophia Grillo, Gonzalo José Tejera, Silvio Nicolás Previale, Zulma Rocha, Cecilia Tróccolo, Luis Latorre, Gustavo Risso, Ivonne Bentancur, and Norma Priario. |

 ‘Acoustic Trio’ is a DVD featuring French jazz accordionist Richard Galliano, Jean Marie Ecay - guitar, and Jean Philippe Viret - double bass, recorded on August 11th 2000 by Dreyfus. Black Country Accordion Club, Birmingham - UKby Rob Howard |
 Monday July 27th was a night to remember at the Black Country Accordion Club as the guests were The Kyiv Duo, Oleksiy Kolomoiets and Igor Sayenko, from the Ukraine. The Kyiv Duo were also raising funds for the Hippokrat Society, which provides much help for the families of sick and disabled children who suffered after effects from the Cherobyl Nuclear disaster.The club decided to raise some cash for the charity and had a collection and a stall of goodies for sale. Chairman Barry Smith held an auction, selling off some DVDs and a copy of ‘An A to Z of the Accordion Volume 4’, kindly donated by Rob Howard, and the sum of £187. 27p was raised. Oleksiy and Igor were very pleased to accept this sum on behalf of the Hippokrat Society. Igor and Oleksiy gave a superb performance. In 2001, Igor and Oleksiy met as students at the National Music Academy of Ukraine and have performed together since then. The evening began with a selection of tunes played by Tom Helm, a visitor from the Stratford Accordion Club, followed by Harry Evans, then Matt Murphy, from Lichfield, who set about playing a selection of Irish jigs and reels. The Kyiv Duo then set about demonstrating their skills to a very appreciative audience. Included in their selection of music were the ‘Nutcracker Suite’, ‘Flick Flak’, ‘Sabre Dance’, ‘Czardas’, and a selection from the opera ‘Carmen’. As a team they were fantastic, and the synchronization between them was perfection in itself. |

 ‘The Jim Cassidy Collection’ is a reissue on CD of a recording that previously appeared on cassette in 1986, and has been out of print for many years. The 13 tracks include ‘Cordinella’, ‘March Strathspey & Reel’, ‘Mazurka Italiana’, ‘Ossian’, ‘Marche des Footballeurs’, ‘Skinner Reels’, ‘Joyeux Canari’, ‘Kilworth Hills’, ‘Rivalite’, ‘Glenburne Rant’, ‘Nuits de Montmartre’, ‘Morag Ramsay’, and ‘Cuckoo Waltz’.Jimmy Cassidy, one of Scotland’s finest accordionists, won several All Scotland contest titles, and has made numerous recordings.  Accordionist and trumpet player Alex Mexiner is in concert at Bourbon Street Grill, 2605 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, Delawre, on August 15th, 8pm. Alex Mexiner leads his band through an eclectic musical journey that includes Gypsy folk music, jazz, polkas, hoedowns, latin rhythms and more. Alex recently was nominated for a Grammy for his work with Bubba Hernandez on their album ‘Polka Freak Out’, and is touring throughout the US this year as he prepares his next recording. |

| The 37th Annual Scoil Éigse, organised by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. takes place in Tullamore, August 16th to 21st.  American accordionist Mary Tokarski, in New Zealand for the forthcoming CIA Coupe Mondiale, performs in concert at Christchurch Girls' High School Auditorium, 10 Matai St, Christchurch, on Wednesday August 19th, 7pm. | Domenic Amatucci, who performs Beatles music under the name ‘Accordion Beatles’ will perform at the 3rd Annual Orillia Beatles Celebration on September19th in Orillia, Ontario. Domenic, also known as "The Accordion Beatles guy", will be performing throughout the day at the beer gardens, and will appear on the main stage for a short set in the evening. An ‘Accordion Beatles’ CD, titled ‘Out of the Caverns’, will soon be released.
