French Group Babylon Circus Stars at WOMAD 2010 - New Zealandby Harley Jones |
![]() |
![]() New Plymouth's Brooklands Park was transformed over the three-day event into a garden of diverse sounds and eccentric sights. Festival-goers let their freak flags fly with multi-coloured costumes, scarves and hair to match. Womad 2010 featured 266 performers from 19 countries on seven stages and as well as music and performance, it included cooking demonstrations and musical workshops, artists in conversation and a global village. French group Babylon Circus was the must-see act on Saturday and word had got around so the Bowl was packed to the brim with festival-goers eager to see them play a second show. The band's fusion of ska-punk, funk, Afro-beat and humour with Guy Rimbaud (accordion) prominent, commanded a terrific audience response. The weekend's performances marked the band's first time in New Zealand and Baruchel and fellow singer Manu Nectoux said afterwards it would not be the last. "We had the opportunity to come to a place where we are definitely un-famous and to prove everything we have got," Baruchel said. Over the coming weeks Babylon Circus are performing in: April 22nd - Womad 2010 Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates) 24th - Firminy, France 27th – Corbie, France 28th - London, UK May 7th – Incourt, Belgium 8th - Anvers, Belgium 20th – Toulouse, France 28th – Sarlat, France 29th, Cluny, France June 20th – Tilburg, Holland July 13th - Saint-Malo-Du-Bois, France July 24th – Briouze, France |
Tracey Collins Live CD Recording – New Zealandby Harley Jones |
![]() She wrote: “I had Oliver Hammond (double bass) and Ron Sampson (drums) accompanying me thorough out the whole performance. We also had special guests - Edwina Thorne (trumpet), Monica Louis (French vocals) and Ilse Van Wyk (violin) for a few tracks. The album comprises of a mixture of French classics with a twist of Latin. The concert was a live recording, so it was quite a challenge to stop the audience from singing and clapping throughout the songs, but we managed to pull it off! There are even some songs with audience participation. I will keep you posted with the CD's progress- when it will be completely ready for sale.” |
