IV International Competition & V International Festival 'Accordion Plus' - Russiaby Alexander Poeluev |
 The 27th to 31st March 2014 will be the IV International Competition and V International Festival 'Accordion Plus'. This event is organized by the Department of Culture of Rostov-on-Don and the International Music Centre "Harmony".The competition includes classical and entertainment music and ensemble categories for people up to 32 years, (competitors are divided into several categories depending on type of music and age). The concerts of the festival will be held in the biggest concert halls of Rostov. Lots of famous musicians will perform including: Yuri Shishkin, Daniil Cramer (jazz pianist), Alexander Skliarov, Mario Stephano Pietrodarki, Eugene Derbenko, Vasilij Pianoff, Vladimir Murza, Alexander Poeluev and many others. Concert Premiere for the ‘Chinese New Year’, Metz – Franceby Harley Jones |
  On Friday January 17th, 8pm, at l’Arsenel de Metz, France, will be the world premiere of ‘Dun.Wu’, a double concerto for accordion, piano and orchestra, composed by Chengbi An. This work will be performed by Fanny Vicens (accordion, picture right), Sae-Jung Kim (piano), and the Orchestre national de Lorraine conducted by Jacques Mercier. Fanny Vicens (born 1987) studied accordion, piano and musicology at the Perpignon Conservatory, Trossingen (Germany), Lucerne (Switzerland), and at the Sorbonne in Paris. She has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in many countries, and has worked with many ensembles in the field of contemporary music.  The 10th International Accordion Competition takes place in Beltinci, Slovenia, May 8th to 11th, organized by Murska Subota and the Music School Beltinci. The competition includes sections (various age categories) for solo accordion in both classical and entertainment music, chamber ensembles with accordion, solo diatonic accordion, accordion orchestras, and the music of Slavko and Vilko Avsenik (soloists).   The CT Tango Ensemble launch their new CD, ‘Tango Dreams’, on January 25th, 8pm, at the Artscape Theater Centre, D F Malan St, Foreshore, 8001 Cape Town, Western Cape.The CD includes music by Astor Piazzolla, some traditional tangos, tango-valse and milonga pieces, and original pieces composed by Stanislav Angelov and Charles Lazaar. CT Tango Ensemble are Stanislav Angelov (Bandoneón, Accordion & Vibrandoneon), Petrus de Beer (Violin), Albert Combrink (Piano) & Charles Lazar (Double Bass).The album features several guest artists who will join them on this spectacular evening including Melanie Scholtz (Vocals), Juan Simon (Vocals), Dan Shout (Saxophone), Peter Narun (Guitar) & Kevin Gibson (Drums). In addition to the musicians, the renowned tango dance teacher Emiliano Fernandez, from Buenos Airies, will be present. | Young accordionists from the Free States of Saxony, Thuringia and Bavaria, from the Czech Republic and the guest federal states of Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg meet annually in Klingenthal for competitions to demonstrate their skills and to gain competition experience and coveted prizes. For many participants, this is the stepping stone to participation in Klingenthal International Accordion Competitions held every May. It was standing room only as Henry performed well-known pieces, demonstrating the versatility of the accordion. | The Accordions Worldwide news for the week ending January 21st 2000 included an item about a master class taking place in Bulgaria. We have not heard from Bulgaria recently, and wonder what accordion activities are going on nowadays. January Master Class – Bulgaria Contributed by Tsvetana Kojuharova from ‘Accordion Magic’ A master class organized by the Bulgarian Accordion Organization (BOA) together with the Pleven High Music School will be held on January 21st and 22nd in Pleven. The event will include lessons on ‘Bulgarian Folklore and Variete’, by Neno Koichev (Chairman of the BOA Music Council), ‘Classical and modern music’, by Diana Stancheva, and ‘Arrangements for chamber ensembles’, by Georgi Mitev. Approximately 25 participants are expected. |

| Texas Folklife announces its eighth annual Big Squeeze accordion contest for up-and-coming Texas musicians, 21 years of age or younger being players in all genres of the Lone Star State’s accordion-based music, including German, Czech, and Polish polka; Creole, and Cajun zydeco; and conjunto, norteño, and Tejano. The Big Squeeze 2014 talent showcases: · February 1: Houston Creole Festival · February 8: La Joya High School · February 9: McDonald Public Library in Corpus Christi · February 22: Texas Polka Festival & Symposium in Schulenburg · February 23: MECA [Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts] in Houston · March 23: Latino Cultural Center in Dallas · March 29: Los Fresnos High School · April 4: Gallista Gallery with Conjunto Heritage Taller in San Antonio The nine finalists will be announced on April 11. The finalists will perform at the Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin on Saturday, April 26. Three Grand Prize Winners will be selected. There will be one winner for each accordion category—polka, zydeco, and conjunto. All three winners will perform at Texas Folklife’s highly acclaimed annual Accordion Kings & Queens Festival at Houston’s Miller Outdoor Theatre on Saturday, June 7, 2014. | On Saturday January 25th, 10am, there will be a Folkworks Winter Workout Day on ‘Accordion technique – especially the left hand’ at The Sage, Gateshead. The course is aimed at Intermediate / Advanced standard players, and the tutor is Ian Lowthian. There will also be courses for fiddle, flute, guitar and other fretted instruments taking place.
