For the concert, the players were each plugged into a mixer (one player to a channel) and the normal digital accordion bass provided the bass for the whole orchestra.

Earlier in the day, the MusicTech Digital Orchestra performed at the Reality House (picture above) using a combination of 2 portable amplifiers, with 5 accordions plugged into the 5 channels of each amplifier. There is an equaliser on each channel of the amplifier for each accordion. The normal digital accordion bass provided bass for the whole orchestra.

Hof Accordionists Concert Tour - Brazil

by Kevin Friedrich
Julian Feulner, Günther Zeilinger, Johannes DimmlingThe accordion duo Julian Feulner and Johannes Dimmling of the Hofer Symphoniker music school visited Brazil in early October for two weeks together with their teacher Günther Zeilinger (middle, lower picture).

The duo gave concerts in 6 different venues. The first concert took place in Caruaru, a city that has close economic links with Hof, Bavaria, and also happens to be the home of the accordion-led Brazilian Forró regional folk music. Forró is typically played by accordion, drums and triangle.

A TV program was recorded at the concert of the two German accordionists plus two local Forró players, demonstrating the contrast between their respective styles and repertoires.

The concerts held in the cities of Recife and Rio de Janeiro were made possible through the cooperation of the Consulate-Generals of the Federal Republic of Germany. The concert in Recife took place in that city’s Conservatory.

There were a further two concerts in in Rio de Janeiro and Salvador da Bahia. The concert in Salvador da Bahia took place in the church where the German organist Hans Bönisch has played, and was part of an international musical series established 16 years ago. Julian Feulner and Johannes Dimmling were the first accordion duo to play there.

Buckwheat Zydeco at O2 Arena, London – UK

by Rob Howard
Stanley ‘Buckwheat’ Dural of Buckwheat ZydecoBuckwheat Zydeco, from Louisiana, USA, will perform at ‘The Festival New Orleans’ at The O2 Arena, Drawdock Road, London SE10 0BB, on October 24th and 25th.

One of Zydeco’s most popular performers, accordionist Stanley ‘Buckwheat’ Dural has succeeded his mentor, the late Clifton Chenier as a leader in the genre. His style of accordion-driven Zydeco features strains of rock and R&B, and in the process reaches a wider mainstream audience than any artiste before him.

Dural was born in Lafayette, Louisiana on November 14, 1947; with his braided hair, he soon acquired the nickname “Buckwheat” (an homage to the Our Gang character), and by the age of four was already touted as a piano prodigy.

Although often exposed to traditional zydeco as a child, he preferred R&B, and by the mid-1950s was playing professionally with Lynn August; Dural’s notoriety as a keyboardist quickly spread, and he also backed notables including Joe Tex and Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown.

In 1971, Dural founded Buckwheat and the Hitchhikers, a 16-piece funk band which he led for the next half-decade; however, in 1976 he finally fell under zydeco’s sway when recruited to back Chenier — a friend of his father — on tour. Originally brought on as an organist, Dural picked up the accordion within two years and began learning from the master himself; rechristening himself Buckwheat Zydeco, he formed his own combo by 1979, the Ils Sont Partis Band (translated as “They’re off!, ” so named in honor of the cry heard at the beginning of each horse race at the Lafayette track).

The Festival New Orleans is a free festival at The O2 Arena, celebrating New Orleans music and culture, and involving 20 bands and musicians. The event runs from 5pm – 11pm on Friday October 24th, and 3pm – 11pm on Saturday October 25th, and coincides with the New Orleans Saints' official NFL game against the San Diego Chargers at Wembley.

The event will also feature Louisiana food demonstrations, the Mardi Gras Indians, and a host of authentic New Orleans attractions, including a recreation of the French Quarter’s famous Bourbon Street.
