Kiran Ahluwalia Interview Discusses Working with Accordion, San Francisco - USAby Harley Jones |
![]() ![]() In 2007 Canadian Kiran Ahluwalia won the Songlines/WOMAD Best Newcomer Award in the UK. In 2011, the album Aam Zameen: Common Ground won a Juno Award for World Music Album of the Year. For Friday’s show, Ahluwalia’s working with Julien Labro (picture left), a French-born conservatory-trained accordion master who’s equally at home playing Piazzolla as collaborating with jazz vocalist Cassandra Wilson. In many ways, Ahluwalia turned to the accordion out of necessity, following the 2011 death of her regular harmonium player Ashok Bidaye. In Europe, she still uses the harmonium, but in North America she’s yet to find a player who can comfortably step out of classical contexts. “That’s why I had accordion come into my music,” she says. “Now I develop many of the songs with accordion. In 2011 I was asking the accordion to mimic harmonium, now I’m asking harmonium player to mimic accordion. I look for two things in accordion: to do the ballads and to create beautiful melodies, but also to bring a sense of chaos. I’m looking forward to seeing what Julien can do.” |
Video: Potomac Accordion Ensemble Concert, Fairfax - USAby Dan Grauman |
![]() The concert was part of the Bonita Lestina Old Town Hall Performance Series sponsored by the City of Fairfax, Virginia Commission on the Arts. Video 1. The Big Chuich Tarantella by Stas Venglevski Video 2. While I’m Away by Stas Venglevski performed by Joan Grauman and JoAnn Pankow The Potomac Accordion Ensemble was founded in 2004 by its director, Joan Grauman. Originally, Joan formed the group to assist members of the Washington Metropolitan Accordion Society (WMAS) who just started to play the accordion or had just returned to the instrument after not playing for (up to 45) years. The music and the camaraderie kept everyone coming back for more. Soon, the ensemble was being approached by the national accordion associations to perform at their events and banquets. Named after the beautiful Potomac River, the group has performed in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, all over Virginia, Washington, DC and Maryland. Performing in coffeehouses, for major music festivals, farmers’ markets and Christmas events, the now almost eleven year-old ensemble is looking forward to another exciting year of bringing the beautiful sounds of the accordion to the public. |

‘14 Years Ago’: John MacDonald identified as the Mystery Accordionistby Harley Jones |
![]() There is a surprising number of recordings, usually of instrumental music, published each year with little or no credit given to the performers. It is an unjust shame whenever the efforts of musicians are overlooked by record companies. Mystery Accordionist Found! The February 16th 2001 CD review by Tania Lukic-Marx was on a CD entitled ‘Accordion Instrumental’. At that time we were unable to establish the name of the performer. Australian accordionist John MacDonald read the review and knew that he was the artist on the CD! A number of John's early recordings have been re-released many times by different record companies over the years, and it was by sheer chance that he learnt this album had been put together using tracks recorded years ago. We are pleased to be able to give John credit for this CD and have amended our review accordingly. It is amazing that no credit had been given to John or any of the backing musicians on the album. We can only hope that in other parts of the world, the skills of professional accordionists are better recognised by record companies than has happened in Australia. |

NHAA March Meeting, New Hampshire – USAby Rob Howard |
![]() |
The next New Hampshire Accordion Association monthly meeting takes place on Saturday March 21st, 12.30pm until 4pm. NHAA meets at Accordion Connection, LLC, 136 Route 106, Gilmanton, NH 03237. All are welcome. Last month a handful of hardy folks ventured north in uncertain weather to celebrate Valentine's Day in music. A fun jam session was followed by a mini-concert of Frank Marocco arrangements performed by NHAA Music Director Donna Maria Regis. Alas, signs of impending snow brought the meeting to a slightly early close. This month, let's hope mother nature allows a larger group to gather for a full-length meeting to have fun with Irish and spring-related songs. Perform your favorite(s) at open mic and/or bring copies of some songs to share with the Just-for-Fun session. Donna Maria promises to bring a few selections from her 2015 Saint Patrick's Day gig.
