It was atmospheric, friendly, and full of wonderful music from our entrants who were competing in the 66th year of NAO UK national competitions! Outstanding competition successes included: - Simmone Sciammarella (Italy) 1st prize winner in the International Solo category; - Alexander Bodell, 4 times 1st prize solo winner in Recital, 15 & under, 15 & under Musette and 14 & under Polka categories; - Thom Hardaker (Senior) Roland V National category; - Nancy Langton (Junior) Roland V National category; as well as outstanding Orchestral performances from the Graham Laurie Paisley Accordion Orchestra (MD Graham Laurie). During the NAO Annual General Meeting – Elaine Beecham was appointed to the position of Honorary Vice President in recognition of all her years of service to the NAO and Anna Bodell (picture right) was appointed NAO Chairperson for 2011/12. Honoured during the festival with the NAO Associate Award was Mavis Parnell for her devoted service to the accordion spanning over 60 years! The 2012 NAO UK Championships will be held in a new venue – the Adelphi Hotel, Liverpool from 27th -29th April 2012.  A competition named “MusicTech Festival” will begin on 15th September 2011. This is a public vote competition/festival being held on the internet and to be eligible, competitors must play a MusicTech digital accordion or an accordion fitted with MusicTech Midi.MusicTech Director Claudio Sabbatini (picture right) is calling on players to sign up and participate. There is no jury. Instead, online visitors vote, with each person given 1 vote for each category. Voting is from 16th September to 15th October 2011. There are three categories: - Classical (concert music) - Jazz/Pop - Traditional (all traditional accordion numbers, of any type, published or un-published). The rules are online at www.musictechfestival.com - Entries close 31 July 2011 and videos must be in hand by 15 September 2011. - The music must be played live. - Backing tracks are allowed but not pre-recorded audio backing tracks. - Time limit 5 minutes. - Each competitor must send a video containing a single own choice peice. World Accordion Day promotional activities by the Macedonian Association of Accordionists ‘Ljubiteli na klasicnata muzika’ resulted in President, Professor Zorica Karakutovska, appearing live on National TV, Skopje TV stations as well as radio stations for interviews. Pictures and information at: 2011 Macedonia Additionally, the Macedonian Association of Accordionists published an article with information about the 3rd World Accordion Day, being held on the 182nd birthday of the accordion, which was published in all the major newspapers of Macedonia. A very successful concert celebrating World Accordion Day was held on the 6th of May which will be long remembered and was very well received by the large audience. The culmination of the concert was the performance of accordion trio consisting of Prof. Zorica Karakutovska and two students, the winners of the GRAND PRIX at the 49th National competition for chamber music, Bojan Volcevski and Filip Stamevski (duo Fi-Bo). The concert included a premiere performance of a new work by Macedonian composer Elizabeta Ilievska-Bete titled 'Variations' for clarinet, accordion and cello. "Victoria in Pink" to Honor the “Giro d’Italia” Castelfidardo Stage - Italyby Holda Paoletti-Kampl |
  .To honor the arrival of the famous “Giro d’Italia” bicycle tour (race) of Italy coming to Castelfidardo (the home of the accordion), Victoria Accordions has displayed a special "Victoria in Pink" accordion that they manufactured. The leader of this race is wearing the "maglia rosa" (pink shirt). This accordion is fully functional in every detail and is a promotion of accordion, Castelfidardo City and in honor of this great sporting event coming to Castelfidardo for the first time. In the bellows is the words: Giro d'Italia. The accordion is currently on display in the main street of Castelfidardo, with 2 original music sheets for accordion almost unobtainable at present "Coppi in Fuga" and " Bartali in Salita". Coppi and Bartali are two of the most famous Italian racing cyclists and were two great sportsmen who were friends and competitors at the same time. |

 The annual event ‘Days of Macedonian Music 2011’, organized by the Association of Composers of Macedonia – SOCOM, under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Macedonia and the Ministry of Culture, was held from March 21st to 30th in Skopje.At the Macedonian Philharmonic Orchestra concert on March 24th, for the first time in the 66 years that the orchestra has existed, they performed a composition with an accordion soloist. The conductor was Sasha Nikolovski–Gjumar (picture above, Ilievska-Bete and performers bow). The composition titled ‘Capriccio’ by Elizabeta Ilievska-Bete, received excellent critical acclaim. The accordion solo was performed by Bojan Volcevski, a student of Prof. Zorica Karakutovska at the Faculty of Music Skopje. On March 29th, the chamber music concert presented another new work by Elizabeta Ilievska-Bete titled ‘Sigh’ (For my guardian angel) which was performed by the eminent musicians and pedagogues Anna Kontradenko (violin), Oleg Kontradenko (violin), Frosina Balova (viola), Aleksandar Kotevski (violoncello) and Zorica Karakutovska (accordion) (picture below). This new work was also very well received by the large audience and the music critics said it was “an excellent new work”.  To celebrate World Accordion Day and the arrival of China accordion year, the SichuanMusicians Association and Sichuan Accordion Association on May 1, 2011, celebrated these events and also made a promotion for the 2011 Coupe Mondiale being hosted by the China Accordion Association in Shanghai. As well, the Sichuan event was promoting the Fourth Sichuan Accordion Competition and Art Festival,at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music. The main organizer is Prof. Chen Jun, Accordion Department head at Sichuan Conservatory of Music and Chinese Accordion Association Vice President. A total of 500 accordion players and fans attended the Sichuan World Accordion Day celebration including some, who will be competitors in the 2011 Coupe Mondiale, Castelfidardo International Accordion Competition winners, with the youngest player participating, being only only 4 years old, with the oldest being a 76 year old player. |

 Accordionist Salvatore Cauteruccio performed on May 7th in a concert in Monaco of Bavaria (Germany).This event was held at the inauguration of the Akkordeon Centrum Brusch, organized in collaboration with the prestigious accordion manufacturer Ballone Burini Castelfidardo. | On April 23 Corrado Rojac, accordion professor at the Tartini Conservatory in Trieste performed at Harvard University in Boston. At the concert, there were premieres of music written for accordion composed by Harvard composition students. Among them, Trevor Baa, Edgar Barroso and Gabriele Vanoni. The concert held in the beautiful John Knowles Paine Concert Hall was a great success. The professor of composition at Harvard University Chaya Chernowyn, personally congratulated Corrado Rojac. |

 The 4th Strumenti & Musica Festival, Spoleto features competitions and a festival. The competitions includes 7 categories. Up to 12 years, up to 15 years, Classical and Variety categories up to 18 years and up to 32 years plus an ensemble category.Regulations online: 2011 Spoleto Entry closing date is 15 July 2011.  On Saturday 28th May, the accordion students of the Royal Academy of Music will be playing at 7.30pm at Our Lady and St Thomas of Canterbury Church, 22 Roxborough Park, Harrow on the Hill, Middx, HA1 3BE (Tel. 020 8422 2513). For some students, like Ksenija Sidorova (picture right), graduation looms and we find that suddenly they are already in their final year at the RAM. The concert will feature some beautiful music brought to life in the wonderful acoustics of a church whose size is perfect for an accordion recital. |
