Charles Nunzio (1912-2010), New Jersey - USAby Rob Howard |
![]() Details will be available in a few days once they are firm. Charles Nunzio Jr. is preparing an obituary for The Star Ledger and would like to ask for donations in lieu of flowers to be made to the AAA or the Alzheimer's Association in his Dad’s name. Charles Nunzio had a long and stellar history with the accordion. Born in Cattafi, Sicily, in 1912, he was eight years old when he came to the USA. A student and friend of Pietro Frosini, Charles would often fill in for him during his many radio broadcasts. He also was a regular substitute for Joe Biviano and Charles Magnante. Charles Nunzio was the only surviving founding member of the American Accordionists' Association (AAA), and a past President of the Accordionists & Teachers Guild, International (ATG). Charles was active as a teacher, performer, composer and businessman throughout his distinguished career and was the teacher of Donald Hulme, the winner of the 1961 Coupe Mondiale in Pallanza, Italy. A prolific composer and arranger, Charles Nunzio’s output includes ‘Accordion Rhapsody’, ‘American Eagle March’, ‘American Victory March’, ‘Boogie Moderne’, ‘Carnival of Venice (Variations)’, ‘Hungaria Mazurka’, ‘Valse Elena’, ‘World's Fair March’, and many more. Charles Nunzio was well-loved and will be missed. |
Bill Wilkie Steps Down After 60 Years!, Perth – UKby Rob Howard |
![]() |
Bill Wilkie MBE (picture left) has stepped down after a record breaking 60 years (1949 to 2009) as organizer of the prestigious All Scotland Accordion & Fiddle Festival in Perth. This festival has produced countless champions who have progressed to successful careers as professional accordionists or bandleaders, and Bill Wilkie’s contribution to the accordion in Scotland cannot be over stated. The 2009 event featured, for the first time, two all star evening variety shows. The Saturday concert was headlined by Pearl Fawcett-Adriano (picture right), and the Sunday night show starred The Alexander Brothers. The 2-disc DVD of the complete Saturday evening concert is available, featuring accordionists Pearl Fawcett-Adriano, Jimmy Cassidy, John Carmichael, Gary Sutherland, Neil Copland, The Bill Wilkie Accordion Orchestra, plus singers, dancers, comedians and musicians. The DVD is available from Wilkie’s Music House in Perth. The 2010 festival takes place on October 30th, in a new format and venue at The Salutation Hotel in Perth. The festival is now run by a committee, whose chairman is former All Scotland Champion Peter Bruce. The accordion adjudicators are Alastair MacCuish, Wayne Robertson and Gordon Shand, and Claire Telford adjudicates the fiddle sections. The festival begins with a dance on Friday evening to the music of the Graeme Mitchell Scottish Dance Band, and ends on the Saturday night with music from accordionist Robert Black, the Michael Philip SCDB, and fiddler Claire Telford. Vladimir Fonin at Stockport Accordion Club, Cheshire – UKby Rob Howard |
![]() The visit was part of a cultural visit to the NW region, along with Mikhail Senchurov - balalaika, Natalya Gorbenko – piano, and singers Anna Voronina and Sergei Kochetov. The evening began with a club members’ play around, with pieces played by Chris Green, Diana Ainscough, Betty Molloy, Helen Berta, Gordon Porter, John Jones, Tony Wynroe and Rob Howard. After a tea break, Vladimir Fonin conducted a master class with Justin Ryan, with Natalya Gorbenko acting as his translator. The piece Justin played was ‘Asturias’, a Spanish composition for guitar, arranged for accordion. Justin – and the audience – assimilated Vladimir Fonin’s comments and suggestions, and the master class (the first one held at Stockport AC) was thoroughly enjoyed by all present. The evening concluded with Vladimir Fonin performing some Russian folk dance pieces, ending with an exciting version of the ‘Carnival of Venice’ (arranged by P. Frosini). Vladimir Fonin commented that he was interested and delighted to visit an accordion club, where players meet socially and to play together, as he said there is nothing comparable in Russia. He was presented with a copy of ‘An A to Z of the Accordion’, written by Rob Howard, and signed by all those present at the master class. For further information email: robaccord5@hotmail.com |
Accordion Noir Festival!, Vancouver – Canadaby Rowan Lipkovits |
![]() The following report came to Accordions Worldwide from Rowan Lipkovits … For the past three years with assistance from Geoff Berner, an autumn festival has been organized. Starting as a one night event, it has grown into eight continuous nights' of concerts. Opening night's accordion parade was rained out by a torrential downpour, but a dozen stalwarts nonetheless wrapped their accordions in garbage bags and squeezed out tunes. Fortunately, the rest of the performances were inside and the festival was enjoyed over the days, by an enthusiastic audience. |
