‘Accordions International 2009’, Norfolk – UK

‘Accordions International 2009’ takes place at Seacroft Holiday Village, Hemsby, Norfolk, November 13th to 16th 2009. Seacroft Holiday Village offers excellent facilities, and this festival features a range of concerts, dancing and workshops.

The guest artistes include Gennaro Ruffolo (Italy - lower right), Jack Emblow & Tony Compton, Gianni Mirizzi (Italy), All Scotland Champion Wayne Robertson, Giancarlo Caporilli (Italy - top left), Harry Hussey (top right), Peter Ayers, Bert Santilly, and the local accordion quintet Norvic Concordia. This year’s trade show includes displays by Accordions of London, Geoff Holter Accordions, The Accordion Shop, MAP Editions, and ‘An A to Z of the Accordion’.

‘Accordions International 2009’ continues a popular tradition of autumn accordion festivals in the East Anglia region, founded in 1986 by the late Malcolm Gee at nearby Caister. The organiser is now Heather Smith.

New Beltango Duet - Serbia

On the 22nd July in Belgrade , Serbia saw the newest arrival to "Beltango", the famous Tango group from Serbia that has been acclaimed in concerts around the world.

Sincere congratulations goes to Ivana and Aleksandar Nikolic on the arrival of twins Marko (3.5 kg and 52 cm ) and Marija (2.3 kg and 48 cm).

As an accordion enthusiast and graphic designer, Larysa Bodell could not have two more different passions. “To have the opportunity to combine these two passions always comes as a great pleasure, and with the upcoming Coupe Mondiale in New Zealand, i just couldn’t resist making a picture with this in mind.”

Lips Accordion Workshop, Imst – Austria

For the 10th time the city of Imst (located in the Tyrol, near Innsbruck) organized a workshop for musicians and artistes of different styles, from July 13th to 17th. Participants from USA, Germany, France and Luxemburg had the opportunity to combine some relaxing days with artistic activity. Bayanist/accordionist Friedrich Lips (from the Gnessin Academy of Music in Moscow) gave solo lessons to participants giving his view of how to solve musical and technical problems, performance on stage, etc. The programme of the final concert included works by J.S.Bach, D.Scarlatti, F.Mendelssohn, Bartholdy, V.Solotaryov and A.Khatchaturyan. Most probably this successful summer course will continue in 2010.

North Shore City Major Sponsors – New Zealand

With less than 32 days left until the 2009 Coupe Mondiale, the New Zealand public promotion campaign started with the street banner erected in Mairangi Bay, North Shore City over the weekend.

This banner, designed by our graphic artist Pamela Yan, was provided by North Shore City Council as part of their sponsorship of the 2009 Coupe Mondiale.

The banner will be moved to Takapuna for the week of the Coupe Mondiale, when the plan is to transform North Shore City into the "World Accordion Capital" for this international event.

The North Shore City has also sent out 55,000 Coupe Mondiale flyers to every home in North Shore City area and has been a major sponsor of the world class concert venue, the Bruce Mason Center.

Accordionists all over New Zealand have also been asked, to put posters and flyers wherever they can, to maximise the promotion of the accordion in New Zealand.

Wizards to Waltzs by Sue Coppard - UK

From Wizards to Waltz’s, Polkas to Mazurkas - Charnwood Publishing is delighted to announce the release of 15 new compositions by Sue Coppard.

The compositions range up to Grade 5 and include “At the Bar Flamingo” and “Picnic Time in Bavaria” which have both been selected as NAO Test Pieces for the UK Championships 2010.

Sue learnt piano, accordion before becoming one of the founding members of London’s DUNAV Balkan Group. In 1995 she and Bob Norris founded the Wiltshire based White Horse Accordion Club, where she is still one of the team administering WHAC and producing the quarterly newsletters.

Sue’s first accordion compositions were published back in 1987. In 1990 she recorded 22 of her earlier numbers on a cassette ‘MAGIC CARPET’ under Malcolm Gee’s ‘Accordion For All’ label and a further 23 on CD ‘CARRIED AWAY’ under her own ‘Squeeze Music’ label in 2003 (both still available).

Charnwood Publishing and Sue Coppard will be releasing further compositions in the future.

‘Amigos’ Concerts, Wales – UK

The Welsh-based jazz/world music band ‘Amigos’ play a mixture of Gypsy Jazz, Traditional Gypsy, Hot Club Jazz, Hungarian, Yiddish, Russian, French musette, Latin, Spanish, Tex-Mex, Cuban, Samba, Rumba, Calypso and Celtic. The band has to date recorded 8 CDs, the most recent being ‘Tula’, released in 2008.

Founded in 1992 by guitarists Gary Phillips and Andy King, the line-up also includes Nigel Hopkins - accordion, Bethan Frieze - violin, and Andy Coughlan - double bass. Nigel Hopkins also works as Musical Director for the singer Chris de Burgh.

‘Music in the Parks’, Belfast – UK

‘Music in the Parks’ is a series of concerts taking place in parks across Belfast, Northern Ireland, from May to September. These concerts feature a variety of musical styles, including jazz, blues and classical – and some of the concerts are presented by accordion bands.

Café Accordion Orchestra Concert, Minneapolis – USA

The Café Accordion Orchestra, featuring accordionist Dan Newton, perform an eclectic mix of vintage Swing, Latin, American, and French Café Music. Their music evokes the repertoires, style and sound of the Bal Musette orchestras that were popular in Parisian cafés and bistros from the 1920s tt the 1950s.

The CAO will perform at the Loring Pasta Bar, 327 14th Ave SE, Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Tuesday July 28th, at 6pm, and also on each Tuesday throughout August.

Sidmouth Folk Week, Devon – UK

Sidmouth Folk Week takes place in the Devon seaside town of Sidmouth from July 31st to August 7th. This annual festival features a multitude of folk artistes and dance teams, and is a colourful pageant of British and international folk music traditions.

‘Gateway to the Tall Ships’, Belfast – UK

‘Gateway to the Tall Ships’ is a maritime event in Custom House Square, Belfast, Northern Ireland, from August 13th to 16th, celebrating the end of the ‘The Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge 2009’, which takes place between April and August. This event presents an eclectic musical celebration of global influences, including Irish, Mexican and Indian traditions, New Orleans style jazz, as well as contemporary sounds.

The event’s daytime entertainment from 12 noon to 6pm is completely free. Evening programmes run daily from 8pm to midnight. The Mairtin O Connor Band will be making guest appearances.

Thursday night’s ‘Celtic Welcome’ concert stars Four Men and a Dog, with support from BBC Radio Two Award Winners, Lau. Both bands feature accordionists.

Friday’s ‘From the Highlands to our Ireland’ features the Battlefield Band, from Scotland, Saturday’s ‘Salsa Fiesta’ includes a salsa dance workshop and the hot blooded Cuban sound of Orquesta Caché. Sunday’s ‘Titanic World Ceilidh’ features a unique performance by Flook plus a guest appearance by accordionist Karen Tweed.
