Roland and Dallapé: Tradition meets Innovation!, Stradella - Italyby Alessandra Curzi, Roland Europe |

 The Roland V-Accordion, with Roland's innovative technology, will be able to perfectly reproduce sounds of the famous Dallapé acoustic accordions, starting from the very first instrument built in 1876 to the most recent model.Mariano Dallapé designed his first accordion in 1871, and in 1876 began factory production in Stradella, near Pavia, Italy. High quality production methods and materials and the trademark Dallapé sound made the instruments produced highly regarded from the beginning. At the end of 2010, the Dallapé firm closed down, but thanks to an extraordinary cooperation with the Roland Corporation, the sounds of the various Dallapé accordion models remains available into the future. Read Roland & Dallapé Report for full information. The V-Accordion can import sounds digitally reproduced through its USB memory port. On March 11th, Professor Sergio Scappini (picture right) will perform a concert at the Teatro Sociale in Stradella, using the Dallapé sounds. This will be the first public performance of the Roland-Dallapé V-Accordion sounds. The official launch of the Dallapé sounds will be at the Frankfurt Musik Messe, April 6th to 9th with the release of a USB stick containing sounds samples of six of the most well known Dallapé models plus a booklet explaining the history of the Dallapé brand. Big Squeeze Accordion Contest, Houston – USAby Rob Howard |
 The 2011 ‘Big Squeeze Accordion Contest’ auditions, organized by Texas Folklife, take place in Houston, Texas, on March 11th, 7.30pm. The venue is the Eldorado Ballroom, 2310 Elgin Street, Houston. Auditions will be held from 7.30 to 9.30pm, and participants should arrive at 6.30pm. Auditions are open to the public and are free.The Big Squeeze contest is open to Texas accordionists, 21 years of age and younger, and open to all genres of accordion-based music, including Cajun; German, Czech, Polish, Tejano, Conjunto, and Norteño, Western, and Zydeco. Zydeco accordionist Keyun Dickson, the 2010 champion, and 2008 champion Johnny Ramirez will both perform during the evening. The semifinals take place in Austin on April 30th at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. Up to four finalists will be selected to compete at the Accordion Kings & Queens Festival on June 4th. Last year’s crowd numbered over 6,000. The Big Squeeze 2011 grand-prize-winner will receive a prize package valued at $4500, including a $1000 cash prize, a brand new Hohner accordion and recording time at the historic Hacienda Records in Corpus Christi, as well as promotional support from SugarHill Records, Hohner, Inc., Hacienda Records and Texas Folklife, and other professional opportunities.   There are several individuals around the world who own large collections of accordions, and Accordions Worldwide has recently become aware of yet another, this time situated in Tabriz, Iran. Enthusiast Gholamreza Seyed Hasani (picture right) has approximately 200 instruments of various types, and plans to open a museum sometime in the future in Tabriz. Tabriz is about 600 km from Tehran and about 250 km from Azerbaijan City. Gholamreza Seyed Hasani, married with a son and daughter, was born in Tabriz in 1959 where he works as a civil engineer. He is currently the Project Manager of a concrete dam. His hobbies are playing accordion, making personalized Garmon accordions (a type of accordion originating in Azerbaijan) including the first digital Garmon accordion (picture left) and maintaining his magnificent collection.   Accordion players drew the crowds at the Bit tourism show in Milan, held from February 18th to 20th. As part of the Marche regions exhibit at the show, the International Museum Castelfidardo and accordionists Mirco Patarini (Scandalli, picture left) and Danilo Di Paolonicola (Paolo Soprani, picture right) were invited to mount an exhibit and perform to a very attentive audience. The accordion is an important factor for the Marche regions tourism and its contribution at the Bit Tourism show was much appreciated. Newspaper story below. |

Sir George Shearing (1919-2011), New York – USAby Rob Howard |

| Sir George Shearing, the London-born blind pianist and composer died on February 14th in New York, at the age of 91. A gifted pianist from the age of three, George Shearing later also learned to play the accordion, studying at the London-based British College of Accordionists in the late 1930s. In the 1940s Shearing played a lot of accordion in addition to his rising career as a jazz pianist, and played the distinctive looking Uniform Keyboard system. Shearing made numerous recordings on accordion, many of which have become available on CD in recent years. The CD box set ‘Squeeze Me: The Jazz & Swing Accordion Story’ includes several Shearing tracks. Shearing was discovered by the jazz critic and pianist Leonard Feather in the late 1930s playing accordion and piano in an all-blind band. From 1947 Shearing lived in the USA, taking out US citizenship, formed the George Shearing Quintet, and created one of the most recognized sounds in jazz. He performed and recorded with the likes of Nat King Cole, Mel Tormé, Peggy Lee, Stephane Grappelli, Buddy DeFranco, Arthur Fiedler, Carmen McRae, and Nancy Wilson. Shearing has around 300 compositions to his name. His best-known piece, ‘Lullaby of Birdland’, has become one of jazz’s true anthems. He once commented, “I get tired of playing it, but not of collecting the royalties!” George Shearing became Sir George Shearing in 2007 when he was knighted for his services in music. |

 ‘Come West Along the Road Vol.3’ is the third in a series of DVDs presenting 65 live Radio Telefis Eireann TV broadcasts, dating from 1961 until the present day, by many of Ireland’s best folk musicians, singers and dancers. The total running time is 202 minutes. The RTE studio performances are in both colour and black and white.The performers include several accordionists, such as Charlie Harris, Vincent Tighe, Dave Hennessy, Sharon Shannon, Ellen Flanagan, Dermot Byrne, Seamus Walshe, John Joe Gannon, and Jimmy Doyle. | Brother and sister, Anna Jbanov (piano) and Roman Jbanov (accordion) have recently been on a concert tour together titled “days not as classic as...”, performing a Russian program, including music by Chamo, Semionov, Koniaiev, Vatzlav, Troyan, ending with pieces representing a trip between Paris and Moscow. Their tour closed with a magnificent performance, in which the duo’s program of ‘Ballades’ and ‘Troika’, Christmas and New Year's songs, tango music, transported the audience into a musical dream world. ‘14 Years Ago’ – Accordions debut at the Vaticanby Rob Howard |
 The news on Accordions Worldwide for the week ending February 28th 1997 contained a report of accordionists from Castelfidardo, Italy, performing during a Christmas event at the Vatican, in the presence of Pope John Paul 11. THE ACCORDIONS OF CASTELFIDARDO IN THE VATICAN, ROME Contributed by Holda Paoletti-Kampl For the first time an accordion has made its entrance in the most famous square in the world, colouring with its notes, the magical atmosphere of the Roman Christmas! Last year on the afternoon of the 24th December, during the solemn opening of the Christmas Manger by His Holiness Pope John Paul II, a group of accordionists from Castelfidardo (formed by Massimiliano Pitocco and Renzo Ruggieri) took part in the festive celebrations. The event, organised by Telepace, has been broadcast by several television channels. The accordionists were introduced by Don Giovanni D'Ercole and Piero Schiavazzi to entertain all the guests, amongst which there were actors, singers and politicians. In this international atmosphere the accordions from Castelfidardo were played. It was a unique opportunity for the revaluation, promotion and re-launching of this often underestimated musical instrument which is still an integrating part of the Italian musical and cultural heritage. |

 Serbian born accordionist Milos Milivojevic, first prize winner at international competitions in Germany, France, Italy and Denmark, is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London. 37th Accordion and Fiddle Championships, Falkirk – Scotland, UKby Rob Howard |
  The 37th Accordion and Fiddle Championships take place on March 5th at Inchyra Grange Hotel, Polmont, Falkirk, Scotland. The competitions include Traditional Accordion Solo, Polka and Musette, with other sections including Scottish Bands and Trios. There are also fiddle sections. This year’s selected composers are Ian Powrie – accordion, Michael Philip – fiddle. The adjudicators for accordion include Jimmy Cassidy, Alan Kitchen, Jacqui Raeburn, Alastair Wood and Bill Black; fiddle – Gill Simpson, Patsy Reid, Kenny Wilson.  its a gold and white MAGRITI. crest on treble side says: ALTIMORO BALERNI and underneath of it; CASTEL FIDARDO. on the back of the bass side is an emblem that states: made in italy 23.054ABenclosed is a pic of it. any info regarding date of manufacture, purchaser etc. its a great sounding accordion and would love to establish its history. |

 Hi, I have a accordian and I'm trying to figure out what it is. I can not find a model number or build tag anywhere on it. It appears to be fairly old but I know nothing about it. I'm trying to sell it and I'm looking for a starting point. The bellows(the thing between the to halfs i think thats what its called) is fine no tears and it opens and closes good make some nice sound but again I know nothing about this thing. It has a eagle in the face thats ingraved as well as the rest of the face.If someone could help me out I would greatly appreciate it. I included some pics, if you need to know anything else let me know. Thanks Kurt |
