World Accordion Day, an initiative of the Confederation Internationale des Accordeonistes (CIA) will be held from 8am Sunday 5th May to 8am Monday 6th May (French time) broadcast on the Deschamps Channel and World Accordion Day websites. World Accordion Day will be co-presented by Frederic Deschamps and Grayson Masefield assisted by CIA President Raymond Bodell and Director Mike Rossi. Start time is 7 am, Sunday 5th May 2013. This is the 6th CIA World Accordion Day and the 2nd year to have World Accordion Day celebrated with a 24 hour round the clock, round the world web TV broadcast which last year was very successful, attracting over 310,000 viewer minutes from 87 countries. ![]() Naomi Harris of Spokane, Washington, was one of the three representatives for the Junior Division. Naomi is a student of Patricia Bartell in Spokane. Rachel Quirbach of New Hampshire studies with Donna Michael at Miguel School of Music in Lowell, MA, and Tor Stumo of Massachusetts is a student of Mary Tokarski in Northford, CT. Sam Thomas will represent the AAA / USA in the Virtuoso International Entertainment division. Also from Spokane, WA, Sam is a student of Ilmar Kuljis. Sam is no stranger to Coupe Mondiale competitions. He represented the AAA / USA in both the Entertainment Competition and the Piano Accordion Competition in Norway in 2006 and again in Alexandria, VA, in 2007. The two contestants from Spokane performed via Skype for the AAA adjudicators, Linda Soley Reed (AAA President) and Frank Busso (AAA 1st Vice President). We wish our young artists the best of luck at the 66th Coupe Mondiale in Victoria, B.C. Canada. |

Their music ranges from ethnic melodies, groove rock, Latin beats, to the nuances of jazz, which characterizes their until now unreleased songs. ![]() The jury of the competition included: People's Artist of Russia, professor, composer Viatcheslav Semionov (jury chairman), head of the department "folk instruments orchestra" of Moscow Regional College of Art, Marina Mikitskaya, head of the department "folk instruments orchestra" of college RAM Gnesins’ Viatcheslav Vlasov and "Roland Music" marketing manager Ilya Sandalov. The auditions of the first category – “School” – was held on the 21st of April in the big hall of one of Moscow's music schools. Young competitors (between 8 and 15 years old) were requested to play a free program using a Roland FR-1. The winners of this category are: 3rd place – Ivan Evdokimov (Moscow) and Vladimir Lopatin (accordion, Moscow). 2nd place – Gleb Legov (Serpukhov). 1st place – Konstantin Ryabin (Yoshkar-Ola) – who won a Roland FR-1. The auditions of the second category – “College” – was held on the 22nd of April in Small Hall of the College of RAM Gnesins’. The participants performed a free program of 10-15 minutes using the Roland FR-3. The winners of the category “College” are: 3rd place – Arslan Petrov (Yoshkar-Ola) 2nd place – Alexandra Rybochkina (Khimki) 1st place - Denis Koptelov (Moscow). Denis won a Roland FR-3. The level of all competitors was high. All of them demonstrated interesting arrangements and good skills of playing on digital instruments. All participants received certificates and gifts and a USB flash-driver with the bank of sounds by Roland which expand the possibilities of the instrument. After the auditions was a small concert. Elizaveta Norik (Russian folk vocal) performed 2 Russian songs with the accompaniment by Helena Tenkova (Roland FR-1) and the winner of Roland V-Accordion Festival 2012, Klavdia Tarabrina performed her Festival program on accordion FR 7-x. |

![]() ![]() Caro Emerald (real name Caroline Esmeralda van der Leeuw, 1981), debuted in 2009 as a recording artist, and has since built up a huge following in many countries. She was trained as a jazz vocalist at the Amsterdam Conservatory, graduating in 2005. Carel Kraayenhof is one of Europe’s leading bandoneon players. He came to prominence in 2002 when he played at the royal wedding of Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and Argentinean Maxima Zorreguieta. |

The Accordions Worldwide news for the week ending April 30th 1999 included an item, titled Accordion Article, stating that an article about Tex-Mex music had become available on this website. Tex-Mex is the regional accordion-led genre popular in Texas, and the article (still available to read) explains its origins. On the Accordions Worldwide home page, under ‘Publications’ on the right hand side, is ‘Articles’. This constantly expanding sections currently has no less than 66 articles on wide ranging accordion-related topics – a considerable educational resource. Morley Accordion Orchestra (MD Ian Watson) perform in a special concert taking place at the Emma Conns Hall, Morley College, on Saturday May 4th, 7.30pm. This concert includes a new commission (by Jason Carr), ‘Europa’, a wonderful roller coaster of a piece taking one from the dark streets of 1950's Moscow to the jazz fueled cafes of 1960's Rome, via a siesta in Madrid, and a stunning final movement which depicts an ocean liner arriving in Stockholm. The 30 strong orchestra with full percussion section will also play pieces by Piazzolla, Henri Mancini, and Ian Watson. Also performing are the quintet – ‘Accordion5’ - with Julie North, Shona Holmes, Maria Serdyuk , Sarah Crisp, and Ian Watson. The quintet perform Ian Watson’s new arrangements of 'Summer' from the ‘Four Seasons’, by Vivaldi, and 'Orawa', a stunning piece by W. Kilar, as well as original pieces for accordion ensemble. The concert is also being recorded to become the orchestra’s second live CD. Morley Accordion Orchestra and ‘Accordion5’ are travelling to Austria to compete in the World Music Festival in May.
