Augustinas Rakauskas Wins ‘2 Minutes of Glory’ TV Show - Lithuaniaby Horst Fausel, Hohner, Product Manager, Accordion |
![]() Augustinas has succeeded brilliantly, starting the competition in January with a masterful interpretation of the arrangement of Vivaldi's ‘Winter’. He then performed last month the famous ‘Figaro’, by Rossini, and this catapulted him straight into the semi-final with a unanimous jury and public vote. On March 28th it was a real coup with Augustinas interpreting the difficult French piece ‘La Tempête’, by André Astier, coming 1st in the selection for the finals, and on May 23rd he won the finals, performing ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, by Queen, which was really exciting. As the winner of this competition ‘2 Minutes of Glory’ he was invited to the Super Finals of the winners. Here he won the 4th place amongst a lot of high level Circus Artists, dancers, singes, etc. With this result he did a superb job for his career and for the accordion in general. He was guided by Frederic Deschamps, who has been helping the young artist with advice, technical, musical and stage craft using Skype (Internet). Enjoy his excellent performance in: - the semi-final http://www.accordion-space4u.com/user.aspx?user=5&item=6&id=128 - the final http://www.accordion-space4u.com/user.aspx?user=5&item=6&id=140 - the superfinal http://www.accordion-space4u.com/user.aspx?user=5&item=6&id=141 |
Pietro Adragna (Italy) Wins Primus Ikaalinen VI – Finlandby Kevin Friedrich |
![]() |
![]() The festival includes the Primus Ikaalinen VI competition, which was broadcast online and live TV Broadcast on National Finnish TV on Thursday July 1st. Primus Ikaalinen brings some of the best entertainment accordionists from all over the world to Ikaalinen with 1st prize of €3,000 was won by Pietro Adragna (Italy), 2nd prize of €2,000 was won by Petar Maric (Serbia), 3rd prize went to Madina Tsaloeva (Beslan, North Ossetia, Russia). In an extremely close competition, Pietro Adragna and Petar Maric had equal marks. This had happened last year (for the first time ever) when Grayson Masefield (New Zealand) also had equal full marks with Petar Maric and in both cases, the jury had to confer to decide the winner with Petar Maric just missing the win. Such close competition has never happened before in the history of Ikaalinen accordion competitions and is a tribute to the talent, ability and training of the contestants. Each contestant performed two virtuoso entertainment style pieces of 3-4 minutes in duration suitable for a public entertainment concert accompanied by a band provided by the organizers. Please visit the Daily Reports on the Sata-Häme Soi website. You can also find links for the live TV show Coverage of Primus Ikaalinen VI on the Sata-Häme Soi website. |

An Honour for Gottfried Preisl, Vienna – Austriaby Herbert Scheibenreif |
![]() |
Last Friday, Andreas Mailath Pokorny (center), Vienna’s Head of the Cultural Department, presented the Golden Decoration for Cultural Services for his home town to Gottfried Preisl (picture right - CIA Honored Friend of the Accordion in 2008), who created a place for the world music in Vienna. Without any exaggeration Preisl could be called “maker of world-music festivals”. Many musicians, like Laudator and chief of the Tschuschenkapelle Slavko Ninic, have to be thankful to Preisl for giving them opportunities for concert appearances. He also succeeded in attracting a new public for the accordion coming to Vienna, even from abroad, in order to listen to concerts of the festival. Gottfried Preisl was working in a bank before becoming concert organizer. The native Viennese started the international accordion festival in 2000, which ranks among the established music festival of Vienna nowadays. In 2004 he created the Klezmer festival, which presented a program of exclusively Jewish music in Vienna for the very first time. |

Frank Marocco’s new CD, ‘Changes’, California – USAby Rob Howard |
![]() "The idea of this project was conceived by my manager and good friend, Elke Ahrenholz, who thought that I should record my originals. In the past I had always recorded mostly standards or evergreens, so with this CD of originals she wanted other musicians to be able to hear my music. On one of my last visits in Europe, Elke organized some studio time in Bologna and called Italian musicians to record with me. One of them is the tenor sax player, Carlo Atti, who I heard in a previous tour in Italy. I thought his style and especially his sound was exactly what I wanted. Both musically and personally, we connected immediately. The title of the CD came out of one of my originals, a funky piece with many changing, repeated chord sequences, therefore the title ‘Changes’. The CD involved many different musicians. Some of the tunes were recorded in LA, where I played with Ron Feuer the great jazz organist, and George Green on drums. There is only one standard, ‘Estate’, which is one of my favorite tunes, written by the Italian composer Bruno Martino. It was a total new experience to record in the relaxed Italian atmosphere, in between good Italian food and coffee breaks." The tracks (all originals except the second, ‘Estate’, by Bruno Martino) are: ‘Changes’, ‘Estate’, ‘Get Over It’, ‘Blue Notes’, ‘Black is Beautiful’, ‘Starbrite’, ‘Sentimenti Nuovi’, ‘Serenity’, ‘In The Stillness’, ‘Stepping Out’, and ‘I Know You’ Frank Marocco is one of the most recorded accordionists in, having played on a vast number of movie soundtracks, television scores, commercial jingles and record albums, in the studios of Hollywood and beyond. He has recorded for and/or worked with artists ranging from Brian Wilson, Pink Floyd and Madonna to Luciano Pavarotti, conductor Maxim Shostakovich, and composer John Williams. The new CD, ‘Changes’ is available directly from Frank: frankmarocco@yahoo.com It is available in Europe: eahrenholz@me.com. |

‘Tag der Harmonika’, Rottenmann – Austriaby Herbert Scheibenreif |
![]() The possibility to study the accordion at all major conservatories and universities of music as well as the work of the newly formed executive committee of Austrian Confederation of Accordionists HVÖ is finally showing very positive results. The most impressive performances came from Johannes Münzner, Paul Schuberth (accordion) and Leopold Schütz (diatonic). Surely they will be going to represent their country at international competitions such as the Coupe Mondiale in Varazdin in October or the World Diatonic Competition in Inzell next year. For the very first time the award of ‘Merited Friend’ was given to Franz Chmel (mouth organ), Franz Haas (accordion) and Heinz Rabitsch (diatonic). |
