Note from the Director of Accordions Worldwide:-by Harley Jones |
![]() |
![]() Also there will be Professor Li Cong, who has done so much for the accordion in China over many years as President of Shanghai Accordion Association, Head of Music at Shanghai Normal University, Director of Accordions Worldwide China Site, and also being a key organizer for the 2011 Coupe Mondiale in Shanghai. The 2010 Harbin Organization Director is Prof. Wang Hongyu of Harbin Normal University and to him and his team, our sincere congratulations on organizing such a major event with so many famous accordionists from all over the world taking part. We will bring you Daily Reports online on the Harbin 2010 Website, 7-10 August. I have many fond memories of China. My first tour to China was in 1988 as a Director of the Air New Zealand Accordion Orchestra and soloist, performing 'Rhapsody for Accordion and Orchestra' with famous composer/conductor Gary Daverne ONZM (recorded by me on CD with accordion orchestra and symphony orchestra). The Air New Zealand Accordion Orchestra was the first accordion orchestra to be invited to tour China and the tour included fully televised concerts in the Shanghai and Beijing Concert Halls. Also a guest on that tour, was the then AAA President Faithe Deffner. Today, Chinese accordion orchestras follow the example of the Air New Zealand Accordion Orchestra, (which enjoyed standing ovations throughout Europe and North America on many different tours) playing their complete program from memory. Other memorable trips to China include: 2006 Shanghai Spring Festival, 2008 Shanghai and 2009 Shanghai Spring Festival events. Wearing my hat as Vice President of the South Pacific Accordion Championships, and Public Relations Officer for the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA), I am also looking forward to meeting many Chinese friends who have attended this event in New Zealand in past years and also the 2009 Coupe Mondiale that was held in Auckland, New Zealand. It will be fun. Harley Jones Director, Accordions Worldwide |

20th Anniversary of Accordion, Official Instrument of San Francisco - USAby Rita Barnea |
![]() On April 26, 1990, the Board of Supervisors voted 6 to 4 in favor of designating the accordion the city’s Official Instrument. This is all due to Tom Torriglia’s (picture right) intense campaigning at City Hall to make the accordion the official instrument of San Francisco. Tom even took the witness stand in a mock trial to testify on behalf of all things accordion while being booed by a chorus of kazoos! This all happened in 1990. At that time, San Francisco did not have an official instrument. Thanks to the efforts of Tom Torriglia, the accordion is San Francisco’s official instrument! The Board of Supervisors passed the measure which then went to the mayor’s office for his signature. Realizing what a hot-button issue this was, the mayor, Art Agnos, decided not to act and the measure became officially approved by default. Tom has been in the music business since the late 1960s. He is a tireless accordion promoter and was an original member of Those Darn Accordions. Additionally, he is responsible for making June “National Accordion Awareness Month.” Today, he plays a variety of gigs around the Bay Area, often with his popular retro-Italiano band, Bella Ciao. |

Kyiv Classic Duo Final UK Concert - UKby Harley Jones |
![]() The Duo began with a few popular classics and the expression and feeling that they put into their playing was felt by a very still and silent audience. Almost every other number was received with a standing ovation. This was music at its' very best. Oleksiy Kolomoiets and Igor Sayenko returned in style with music from Carmen. They completed the evening with a selection of popular tunes but their version of the Flight of the Bumblebee brought a standing ovation once again. These two musicians are wonderful ambassadors to the accordion world. They are raising money for the children affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Hippokrat is a society of mothers and disabled children in the Chernov region of the Ukraine. |

Accordion Featured on Mad Men TV Show - USAby Harley Jones |
![]() |
![]() It turns out that Christina Hendricks, the actress who plays Joan Holloway is no newcomer to the accordion; she’s been playing for a few years. In an LA Times Magazine interview last month, she talked about how she got into the accordion. “I started taking lessons four or five years ago. It is such a rich instrument for one person. You can get so much out of it, like a one-man band. I also think it’s a very romantic instrument, and it channels all the things I love—French culture, Tom Waits—and all the things I try to make my house look like. It’s something I’ve always been interested in.” |

S. SOPRANI ?by | Modify | Delete |
I recently received an accordion my Uncle left behind. The name on the front is S. Soprani. It has 19 1/4 keyboard, 120 bass, 12 treble w/master, 7 bass shifts. 4/5 reeds (LMMH). It also has dual pickups with separate volume and tone controls for each. I am curious as to who manufactured and an approx. what year this would be. The only tag on it says "Made in Italy" with a number 218 stamped under it. I can't find any info on S.Soprani on the internet. Can anyone help? |
