‘14 Years Ago’: The growing popularity of free bass in Chinaby Rob Howard |
![]() ![]() Over 200 years ago, when it was suggested by his aides that France should consider colonization in China, Napoleon Bonaparte replied, “Let China sleep. When she awakes the world will tremble”. Perhaps the emperor foresaw the coming of the accordion! Free Bass Accordion Growing in China Contributed by Prof. Li Cong The popularity of free bass accordions is growing steadily in China. In a recent accordion Master Class (organized by the Tianjing Music Conservatory), over 40 students took part, most of whom had free bass accordions. At the August China International Accordion Festival Competition, all competitors in the Adult Class played free bass accordions, with many also in the younger age classes. Over the last few years, Professor Elsbeth Moser (Hanover College of Music, Germany) has visited China several times teaching free bass accordion and encouraging new playing ideas and music. Cao Xiao-Qing has assisted European accordionists to give successful lectures and master classes in China. The Tianjing Music Conservatory, which has built up a vast amount of teaching material and experience has over forty, free bass students. The conservatory believes that teachers will benefit from learning more about free bass techniques, so is currently organizing classes for young teachers and students. |
