 As many of you reading this will know, on May 6th 1829 Cyril Damian (that’s the anglicised version of Cyrillius Demien, 1772-1847) patented the accordion in Vienna. 180 years later, the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) has designated May 6th 2009 as World Accordion Day, with the objective being to foster: “A unified global effort to celebrate and promote the accordion”.There is a list of events taking place in many countries to celebrate World Accordion Day on this website, and we welcome any additions. ‘Spring Instruments & Music Festival’, Spoleto – Italyby Mirco Patarini |

| The second ‘Spring Instruments & Music Festival’ will be held in Spoleto (PG), May 10th to 17th. Entries can still be accepted. The competition (www.strumentiemusica.com/festival_uk.html) is open to accordionists from all the world, the two best Italian players will have a sponsored by IAC for the travel and hotel for the CIA Coupe Mondiale in 2009, held in Auckland, New Zealand. This year’s festival has an international theme. The great Russian composer Viatcheslav Semionov (who is also the Chairman of the Jury) will give a concert together with his colleagues Alexander Selivanov and Yulia Amerikova (winners of the 2009 CIA Coupe Mondiale chamber music category); other concerts will be held by Vladislav Pligovka (winner of the 2009 Coupe Mondiale category solo concert artiste), and the formidable Brazilian group Renato Borghetti Quartet, who holds the record for sales in Brazil for a CD of instrumental music. Viatcheslav Semionov also will hold a Master Class, which is a great opportunity for those who want to integrate their preparation with the advice of one of the most famous teachers and composers of the accordion world. On Saturday May 17th, in cooperation with Roland Italy, there will be the Italian final of the Roland V-Accordion Festival, where the Italian contestant will be chosen for the world final (Rome, November 21st 2009).  The Australian International Accordion Championships take place on June 6th and 7th at Club Marconi, Prairie Vale Road, Bossley Park, Sydney, NSW 2176. To date, entries have been received from Serbia, Croatia, New Zealand and Australia, with the wide variety of age competition classes covered. The event is run by the Australian Accordion Teachers Association.The festival guest artistes include: Nemanja Drazic , Serbia (2nd place 2003 Coupe Mondiale Juniors), Mia Cojbasic, Croatia (4th place 2007 Castelfidardo International Accordion Competition Seniors; 4th place 2008 Tianjin China International Accordion Competition), Marko Miletic, Serbia, World Accordion Champion (2008 Coupe Mondiale Piano Accordion Class), Australian Accordion Concert Ensemble, Accordigles, Funkordion, and more… On Sunday June 7th the AATA invites participants and observers to take part in the master classes with prominent international accordion teachers. Lips’ Piazzolla-Studio Performs in the Kremlin, Moscow – Russiaby Dr Herbert Scheibenreif Manager of Friedrich Lips Productions |
  Russian bayanist S. Voitenko succeeded in organizing a great event in Moscow’s Kremlin, where not only accordion artists like Yuri Shishkin, A. Gainullin, Sergey Osokin, S. Shmelkov took part but also Russia’s leading ensembles of folk, jazz and pop music. Friedrich Lips performed “Cocktail Rio Rita” with his tango ensemble Piazolla-Studio the group members being Friedrich Lips (accordion), V. Igolinsky (violin), K. Rodin (cello) and S. Lips (piano). The group recently released two CD's named ¡Buenos Dias, Astor! and La Cumparsita. CD Reviews Index and purchase online at the Friedrich Lips website. Friedrich Lips mentioned in his humorous speech that “in former times the accordion was played at weddings, then was accepted at conservatories, but now it has conquered the Kremlin”. |
Tony Lovello ‘Accordion Favorites’ CD – USAby Rob Howard |
 A collectors’ item LP recorded by Tony Lovello in 1949, ‘Accordion Favorites’, has at long last been issued on CD. At the time, the up and coming Tony Lovello was performing the pieces on this recording to demonstrate the range and flexibility of the accordion, and had just appeared in a major concert alongside Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Durante, Eddie Cantor and Debbie Reynolds.The tracks include: ‘Quicksilver’, ‘O Marie’, ‘Tiger Rag‘, ‘Tesoro Mio’, ‘Sorrento’ Carnival of Venice’, ‘Warsaw Concerto’, and ‘The Sharpshooter’s March’.
