2009 Shanghai Spring National Accordion Competition – Chinaby Harley Jones |
 The 2009 National Accordion Competition, 1st to 3rd May, has some 400 entrants in various categories. In a major change from the past, about 70% of these entries are for entertainment categories. This competition is the first entertainment competition in China!This competition is also an important event in preparation for 64th Coupe Mondiale at 2011 in Shanghai. Professor Li Cong, Competition Organiser reports, that “I have been promoting multiple development of Chinese accordion since 2006. At that time, there was almost no entertainment accordion performance in China. After a great deal of effort, the situation now seems to be very different. Many young accordion students, including students in the Conservatories, are now interested in popular accordion performance and have started to learn it." During this competition, Shanghai students will hold a entertainment accordion concert. Professor Li Cong says that “a budget of nearly 100,000 RMB has been used for a director especially hired for stage design, plus excellent light and sound equipment will be used. I believe its going to be a very special and interesting concert.” This Concert has been dedicated in celebration of World Accordion Day. Manfrini Accordions Return, Camerano – Italyby Rob Howard |
 Manfrini accordions of Camerano Italy have re-started production after more than 30 years. This company produces hand made accordions, and production will be limited to around 100 instruments per year. All the accordions are made to order giving the customers a say in the build of their instrument.Robert Rolston, originally from Scotland but now based in Italy, has formed the company Manfrini Rolston in conjunction with Ercolano Manfrini. Their models include the Manfrini Esperto, made from the best woods and reeds available. The reeds are selected and tuned by Robert Rolston and Patrick Jackman.  On April 19th a significant concert with the title ‘Su le rive dell’oblio’ - music for accordion and piano - with Alessandro Mugnoz and pianist Claudia Menghi – took place at the Teatro delle Muse in Ancona.The program, with some rare ‘modern premières’ of the 19th Century music by George C. Lickl (1801-1877) – ‘Sonata op. 40 for piano and accordion’, Angelo Panzini (1820-1886) – ‘Grande Sonata for pianoforte and accordion’ , Charles-Marie Widor (1845-1937) – ‘Humoresque and Marche nuptiale’ (dai “6 duos” for harmonium and pianoforte), and Felice Lattuada (1882-1962) – ‘Sulle rive dell’oblio’ (arranged for accordion and piano by A. Mugnoz). A preview of the concert was held in Castelfidardo on April 9th, at the auditorium ‘Binci’ Mordini Palace, in the presence of a selected audience of fellow musicians and performers. The two concerts - much appreciated by their audiences - are in a great part the result of much research work done during the recent years by Alessandro Mugnoz, the chamber music repertoire that includes the accordion, in general, the "free reed " instruments from the 19th Century (repertoire almost forgotten and yet unexplored). They have also presented an initial proposal - musical and cultural - the result of research, in collaboration between the association ‘New Italian Musical Learning Center’ and the ‘International Center for Studies of the Accordion’, based in Castelfidardo. We ask people to register early as hotel registrations are also filling up with the most economic priced category of rooms already fully sold out. The recent much lower value of the New Zealand dollar makes prices in NZ very good value. There are excellent internet airfare prices from Europe, USA, Australia and China to New Zealand. Nominations for members of the Coupe Mondiale Jury are now online. Please send nominations now so jury can book their international airfares early at the best prices. Similarly for delegate registration which is now online. Those wanting to participate in the "World Accordion Orchestra III" can now register online now too. Accordion enthusiasts from around the world are invited to join the "World Accordion Orchestra III" and enjoy participating in a fun, high quality musical event. Some 144 players will participate and we have confirmed about 80 players so far. |

 Fourteen year old Stephanie Sass, from Wasenbach, Germany, an accordion student of the Rhein-Lahn-Kreis Musikschule, received in a single day two trophies - as a national accordion champion in Rhineland-Palatinate, and Rhenish Ludwigshafen champion in athletics in Koblenz.In December 2008 she was the winner of the Assistance Association District Music School, the annual 2 best soloists from approximately 900 music students. Since 2001, Stephanie has taken accordion lesions with Viktor Dupper from Bad Ems, a former accordion teacher of the internationally well known accordionist Veronika Todorova. Charco's Showcase, Liverpool – UKby Jesús Peñaranda Portilla |
 The World Music Band Charco, will offer its public showcase on April 28th, 8.30pm, at the Paul McCartney Auditorium, Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. The ticket costs £2 per person. Charco will offer a set of original music plus Richard Galliano and Astor Piazzolla's covers. Their influences are Spanish, Latin and Eastern European music.  On the 3rd of May, 1pm at the Great Hall of the Rostov State Philharmonic, there will be a concert dedicated to World Day of Accordion. The concert is titled "Accordion Plus". This year, for the first time, the world will celebrate World Accordion Day, as an event approved by the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) - a member of the International Music Counci (IMC), UNESCO. The concert will be attended by Russian stars: Honored Artists of Russia Yuri Shishkin and Anatoly Zaikin, winners of international competitions: Andrew Statsenko, Alexander Poeluev, Alexander Letunov, Arthur Kazarian, ensembles of "New-Centropezn jazz quartet", "Uzory", " Cherkassy", " Ani ", "ARTIS", "Domino", "Foggy Dew", famous harmonica player Victor Skolozubov and many others. |

 Aisha and Victor, a couple of tango dancers and teachers from Buenos Aires, Argentina, are just about to start their European Tango Tour 2009 - from May 15th until the beginning of October.This year’s tour includes Europe with a new spectacle. This year´s ´special´ is a tango performance connecting dancing tango and playing music, a fusion of tango and folk music. The show features the transformation of a musician into a tango dancer, playing tango music - romantic and sensual, and original. The show includes a 4 minute live concert on accordion.   The Wazemmes Accordion Festival takes place at la maison Folie Wazemmes and other venues in Lille, from June 19th to 25th. It is anticipated that over 20, 000 spectators will attend this festival.
